When to Choose DIY and When to Hire a Contractor

When you want to add natural stone to your new home, there are many ways that the material can be quite attractive. Whether you want natural stone countertops or you want all new flooring, you will need to determine whether the project is something that you can complete on your own or if it is something that will require a contractor. Making this decision will have to do with your skill level with home improvement projects, your access to tools and equipment, and what the project actually is. Here is what you need to think about in order to determine if your natural stone project is do it yourself or not.

Know What You Can Manage

You need to think about your home improvement skill levels. If you have not done that much home improvement work experience, then there may be some projects that could be just too advanced. If you have some experience, then you may find that using natural stone tile is quite easy.

Remember to keep in mind that when you will be using natural stone, you will have to know how to cut the tile and you will need to know how to properly fit it in odd areas. For example, laying a tile floor in the bathroom could mean working around odd edges.

Some natural stone tile projects that are simple enough that anyone could do would include laying tile on the floor, retiling a bathroom shower or creating stone tile wall art. Projects that may be a little advanced would include using natural stone to replace the countertop, creating a stone tile backsplash, and retiling a whole bathroom.

Know if You Have the Tools

There are certain tiles that you will need in order to make use of natural stone tile. You need to make sure that you will have access to those tools in order to complete do it yourself projects. Of course, you will need the basics like trowels, spacers and grout. You will also need a wet saw with a diamond bit. This is the only saw that will properly cut natural stone without damaging it. If you do not have access to these tools, then you may need to hire a professional to complete the project. Keep in mind that many home improvement stores will rent out the tools, so do not be dismayed if you do not own them already.

Choosing a Contractor

There are simply times when it makes more sense to choose a contractor to complete your natural stone projects. If you will be laying stone in numerous rooms in your home, the project just may be too big for you to manage on your own. If you are nervous about your abilities to lay tile, then there is nothing wrong with getting a professional to do the work.

Finally, keep in mind that these home improvement projects will take a great deal of your time. If you are very busy, then you may not have the time to complete the project and you may find it better to choose to hire a contractor.

If you do determine that the natural stone tile you want to add to your home is worthy of a do it yourself project, then you will need to choose the right natural stone tile. You are not limited in your options. When you choose to shop with International Marble, you will have access to natural stones like travertine and marble that has been quarried from spots all over the world. You can choose unique options that might not be available elsewhere.
